As simple as it may seem, you need to understand the terms unique to texas holdem poker. As I mentioned in part I, you have to know the language of texas holdem. You don't want to be sitting at a table and have no idea what the other poker players are talking about. If they recognize this, their eyes will light up in anticipation of separating you from your money.
Let's take a look at some of the more common words and phrases used in texas holdem.
Bait: A small bet designed to get another player to come back at you with a raise.
Big Slick: In texas holdem this is having an Ace and a King as your hole cards.
Button: This is the player currently in the position of dealer. You'll hear texas holdem players describing hands and saying they are "on the button.:
Calling Station: A texas holdem player that calls more often than normal, usually just to see if his or her hand has a shot to win.
Chase: Calling to see if you can hit a draw.
Drawing Dead: This happens when someone still in a hand can not possibly win the hand no matter what card comes up on the turn or river. They've already lost, they just might not know it yet.
Maniac: A super aggressive texas holdem player that makes big bets with poor cards, hoping to win with bluffs by buying the pot.
These are just some of the terms you'll need to know if you want to sound like a texas holdem pro. It may seem silly to have to know these terms if you know how the game is played. But showing your ignorance at the table could make you a mark.
